United Kingdom leads in the number of Nigerians registered overseas.

The United Kingdom holds the highest position on the list of registered Nigerians residing abroad, as reported by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.

On June 29, 2021, NiDCOM introduced its Data Mapping and Registry Portal in Abuja, aiming to collect comprehensive and accurate information about Nigerians in the Diaspora.

According to the data shared with our correspondent on Wednesday, individuals from 28 different countries have currently registered on the portal as of the time this report was filed.

Although the commission didn't disclose the exact count of registered diaspora members, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs estimated Nigeria's Diaspora population at 1.7 million in 2020.

Breaking down the data provided by NiDCOM, the percentage of registered Nigerians in the UK stands at 22.5%, followed by the United States of America at 21.4%, and the United Arab Emirates at 5.4%.

Other countries included Qatar (4.8%), Canada (4.4%), South Africa (4.0%), Germany (2.5%), Saudi Arabia (2.3%), Italy (2.3%), Ghana (1.5%), Malaysia (1.1%), France (0.9%), Spain (0.9%), and Uganda (0.7%).

Additionally, the data indicated that Australia, China, Benin Republic, Sierra Leone, Turkey, Switzerland, Russia, Philippines, Niger Republic, Ireland, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan each had varying percentages of registered individuals.

Addressing the lower registration numbers, NiDCOM's Head of Technology Transfer Innovation, Abdulrahman Terab, stated, "Many Diasporas are gradually gaining confidence in the country. We encourage Diasporas to register online during our programs, events, or activities."
