Governor of Akwa Ibom authorizes the disbursement of N1bn to support FG relief efforts

TheGovernor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has given his approval for the immediate release of N1 billion, the initial portion of the state's contribution to supplement the palliative assistance provided by the Federal Government. Additionally, he sanctioned the allocation of N2 billion, the second installment, for the settlement of pensions for retired educators in both state and local government employment.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, the governor assured that the distribution of relief materials to residents will commence on Monday, September 4, 2023. He reiterated his dedication to the implementation of the "One Project Per Local Government Area Initiative" and stated that this action is a temporary measure to alleviate the challenges arising from the removal of fuel subsidies.

Eno said, "Taking into account the state's supplement and the 3,000 bags of rice and N2 billion provided by the Federal Government, we expect that each of the over 2,270 villages in the state will receive a minimum of 50 bags of rice. We will extend this support to various communities and security services that might have difficulty accessing the villages."

The governor announced the approval of an additional N2 billion for teacher gratuities at both the local government and state levels, emphasizing the state's commitment to generating job opportunities for young people through the "One Project Per Local Government Area" approach.

Regarding the protests led by some youths in the state, Governor Eno expressed his regret over the incident and acknowledged that the state government had gathered intelligence on individuals attempting to disrupt peace. He urged these agitators to cease inciting the youth, highlighting the importance of unity and peace in Akwa Ibom.

Eno cautioned, "It's important for us to remember that Akwa Ibom belongs to all of us. Our state is peaceful, and we intend to maintain that environment. As leaders, we must avoid making statements that could inflame the youth. At this juncture, our young people need proper guidance."

He concluded, "I want to inform the people of Akwa Ibom that we possess information about those who are sponsoring these youths, and I strongly advise them to cease such actions."
