Somalia prohibits TikTok, Telegram and betting websites due to 'disturbing content'.

Somalia's Minister of Communications, Jama Hassan Khalif, declared a prohibition on the popular video app TikTok, as well as on the messaging platform Telegram and the betting website 1XBet. Khalif's press release stated that these apps were responsible for inappropriate content and assisting terrorists in disseminating alarming messages to the public. The minister ordered internet companies to cease the usage of these applications, which are exploited by immoral groups and terrorists to distribute disturbing images and false information to the public.

This action followed the announcement by Somalia's president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, regarding plans to launch a military operation against the terrorist organization al Shabaab, aiming to eliminate them within the next five months.

Over the past months, several Western countries have imposed restrictions on TikTok due to concerns about data privacy. The app, owned by the Chinese company Bytedance, has faced allegations of sharing user data with the Chinese government. Numerous US federal agencies have banned the use of TikTok on government-issued devices, while Montana has implemented a comprehensive ban for both government employees and residents. Similarly, countries such as New Zealand, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Denmark have also enforced comparable bans to limit the app's usage on government-owned devices.
