In a devastating incident on the Imesi-Ile highway in Osun State, six lives were tragically lost due to a head-on collision between two vehicles. The accident, which occurred on a fateful Saturday night at approximately 9:44 p.m., was attributed to the brake failure of one of the vehicles involved.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun State Command, under the leadership of Sector Commander Henry Benamesia, confirmed this grim occurrence in a statement delivered by the command’s spokesperson, Mrs. Agnes Ogungbemi, on a somber Sunday in Osogbo.
According to the reports, the collision was primarily between an articulated vehicle, identified as a Red DAF and lacking a number plate, and another blue commercial truck. The collision took place on the treacherous Imesi-Ile hill, and the severity of the impact was exacerbated by excessive speed.
Tragically, the accident resulted in the loss of six lives, with five of the victims rushed to the University Teaching Hospital in Osun by the Nigeria Police prior to the arrival of the FRSC team. The sixth victim was unfortunate enough to be trapped beneath one of the vehicles involved. The heroic efforts of the rescue team, armed with an extricate machine, were required to free the trapped individual's body from the wreckage.
The accident involved a total of 17 individuals, with 11 miraculously escaping unscathed. However, the six lives lost serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the critical need for vehicles to be maintained in optimal condition.
In the wake of this heart-wrenching incident, Sector Commander Benamesia implored all road users to exercise defensive driving practices and remain vigilant at all times to prevent similar tragedies.
