An unidentified man was reportedly shot and killed by soldiers in the Otto area of Lagos mainland following a confrontation with unidentified soldiers. The soldiers had been sent to protect Chinese workers engaged in maintenance along railway tracks, but local youths, known as 'Omo onile,' had been in conflict with the construction workers. Chinese workers had stopped involving the police, believing they couldn't manage the situation, and had instead brought in soldiers.
The Lagos State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, couldn't comment on the incident, as the Railway Command had jurisdiction in the area. A police source expressed concern about soldiers' alleged misconduct in Lagos and urged an end to such incidents. The soldiers involved were not identifiable as they didn't wear tags. Video footage showed soldiers firing shots in the area, causing panic among residents. A background voice in the video expressed shock at the shooting. Another video depicted a dead man allegedly shot by the soldiers, surrounded by mourners.
The spokesperson for the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Lt Col Ayeni, hadn't responded to inquiries at the time of reporting.
