Corn sellers cause insecurity in Abuja – Wike claims

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has banned street vending in Abuja, stating that street vendors, including those selling corn, contribute to the rise of criminal activities and instability within the city.

During a meeting with the management team of the Federal Capital Territory Administration and Federal Capital Development Authority, the former governor of Rivers State made this declaration, urging them to prioritize correct actions.

Wike emphasized the need to restore Abuja to its proper state, expressing concern about the prevalent lack of street lighting in many areas he surveyed. He stressed the urgency of restoring proper lighting.

He issued an immediate directive for the thorough cleaning of Abuja, adding that he would not hesitate to remove any official failing to meet cleanliness standards. Additionally, he emphasized that unauthorized motor parks would not be permitted to operate.

Wike emphasized that street vending would no longer be allowed due to its role in generating unsanitary waste disposal and consequently fostering insecurity. He noted that criminals exploit these situations for information gathering and criminal activities. Clearing the streets of hawkers was deemed essential.

Furthermore, Wike highlighted the pressing need to address the issue of unauthorized structures and shanties, reaffirming his commitment to demolish such structures regardless of the individuals involved.
