In a press conference held shortly after his swearing-in as Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike reiterated his commitment to ending open grazing within the Abuja area. He expressed his determination to consult with herders to find a solution to the practice, emphasizing that allowing cows to roam freely within the city is not acceptable.
Wike elaborated on the distinction between urban and rural areas, stating that while open grazing might be possible outside the city where suitable grasses are available, it cannot be allowed within the city limits. He pointed out that the grasses within the city were intended for beautification purposes and not for grazing.
The governor emphasized the importance of the issue, citing an example within the Presidential Villa where a large number of goats could be seen grazing. He highlighted the potential negative impression this could create for foreign visitors and the need to manage such situations for a more positive and welcoming atmosphere.
Wike's declaration to address open grazing aligns with a broader shift towards more sustainable and conflict-free livestock management practices. By engaging in dialogue with herders and seeking alternative solutions, he aims to strike a balance between the needs of livestock management and the urban environment's aesthetics and functionality.
